Is infrastructure sexy? McSweeney’s thinks so

I regularly receive emails from the literary magazine, McSweeney’s, who also publish The Believer, not to mention numerous books. Today’s email was particularly interesting. Apparently, the Bay Bridge in their hometown of San Francisco is closed for repairs. A chunk fell down on Tuesday and hit a truck and several cars. Now McSweeney’s is dedicating a large part of its next issue to an in-depth investigation into the famous bridge.

La corruption, la collusion, et accessoirement… la construction

Il y a plusieurs façons de réagir aux preuves grandissantes de corruption et de collusion parmi les compagnies de construction responsable pour les routes et les ponts du Québec. La plus commune semble être le cynisme. Dans les commentaires des journaux, vous pouvez presque entendre les soupirs affectés de désabusement et les sarcasmes envers ces personnes qui – dans leur naïveté – peuvent vraiment être scandalisés par ce qu’ils lisent.

Corruption, collusion, and last of all, construction

There are several ways to react to the growing body of evidence of corruption and collusion among construction companies responsible for Québec’s roads and bridges. A common one seems to be cynicism. In comments to the newspapers, you can almost hear the affected sighs of world-weary wisdom, and guffaws toward those people who – in their naïveté – might be genuinely shocked by what they read.

Between a blog and a hard place

In our marketing efforts for Sexy béton I, many things became both clearer and murkier about the changing world of the media and our role in it. It became clear that Porte Parole – as a documentary theatre company – must transcend the traditional world of the cultural media. Obviously, it’s still very important to get critics to our shows. But because our plays are drawn directly from the news headlines – and even occasionally help make the news headlines – we have to focus on civic reporters just as much as cultural commentators.
